In 1985 Moe Berg(vocals, guitar) and Dave Gilby(drums) moved from Edmonton to Toronto. They met Johnny Sinclair(bass) and sisters Tam & Tasha Amabile(background vocals). They released a 12″ single and a low budget video of their first song I’m An Adult Now.
The song was re-recorded and an album was put together called Love Junk(produced by Todd Rundgren). This album was their biggest selling album, selling Platinum in Canada, and making the charts in many other countries around the world. They were nominated for Breakthrough Artist and Best Video at the 1987 Juno’s. It was a sad time for Canadian music, as they lost to Frozen Ghost and The Parachute Club. Blech!!
The next album One Sided Story (also produced by Todd Rundgren) had some hits, including this one.
The band released their 3rd album, The Downward Road. Sales had declined, and after this point they were dropped by their major label. Not before they released this gem though.
Their fourth album Where’s The Bone featured a truly Canadian anthem about hockey.
They released one final album. However, they have never officially broken up. They have done some one off songs over the years. One of my favourites was Edmonton Block Heater. This song has a much harder edge. It’s a raw song that was the opposite of their previous efforts. It was featured on the cd A Tribute To Hard Core Logo. This cd has a bunch of one-offs by a number of well known bands. I suggest to pick this one up ( and also watch the movie Hard Core Logo).
There have been numerous line up changes throughout the years. Here is the list:
The most recent lineup:
Moe Berg (lead vocals, lead guitar)
Dave Gilby (drums)
Kris Abbott (vocals, guitars)[joined 1988]
Brad Barker (bass, vocals) [joined 1990]
Renee Suchy (vocals)[joined 1996]
The alumnae (one alumnus):
Johnny Sinclair (bass, vocals) [left 1990]
Tam Amabile (vocals) [left in 1988]
Tasha Amabile (vocals) [left in 1988]
Leslie Stanwyck (vocals) [joined 1989; left 1990]
Susan Murumets (vocals) [touring in 1990 only]
Rachel Oldfield (vocals) [joined in 1992; left 1995]
Jennifer Foster (vocals) [joined in 1995; left 1996]
Moe Berg lives in Toronto with his wife and 2 young children. His wife runs a successful home run business. Moe continues to make music. He works as a DJ, record producer, music writer and author.
Moe has his own blog site at moeberg.ca. One thing I thought was a great read was his post entitled The Contract. Read it here
Dave Gilby has continued to be a member of TPOH, as well working again with Tam and Tasha Amabile in the group Daughters Of Eve.
Kris Abbott lives in Kingston, Ontario and performs under the band name Kris & Dee.
Brad Barker went back to college and studied broadcasting. He is now an on air personality on Jazz FM91 in Toronto.
Renee Suchy moved back to Edmonton to raise a family, but is still involved in music. She is in a band with her 2 sisters named The Ambers.
Johnny Sinclair and Leslie Stanwyck formed their own band called Universal Honey. To date they have released 7 albums.
Susan Murumets got a degree in psychotherapy and opened her own practice. She continues to perform however under the band name The Cocktail Shakers.
Rachel Oldfield was also in the Canadian band Parachute Club, and is on the Board Of Directors for the Radio Starmakers Fund.
Jennifer Foster has continued to make music and has also delved into acting.
An interesting read from a fellow blogger at Jaded and Elated featured TPOH. Read it here
The band did a reunion show in 2014 that I found out about too late, but I will keep my eyes open for another one. If they ever do reform, I will be the first in the ticket line.

Yes. The Rundgren produced albums were the best. One good thing about researching former band members, is it always leads to new music searches.

TPOH FTW too! A most excellent post, Bop. This band was very important to us at the time, just loved the sound. Nobody But Me was another great tune “who’s gonna clean and perfume your bras like I do?” Haha who perfumes their bras. Anyway.
I read Berg’s book ages ago. Green Room? Something like that. Very good. And then there was that time I unintentionally bodychecked the guy. Anyway.
You’ve got me all fired up to re-visit this band. I’ll bet it stands up very well despite the years.
Also: I second and third Bop’s recommendation to pick up the Hard Core Logo tribute CD. It’s SO GREAT. See if you can also get the actual movie soundtrack, it’s a real corker.

I’ve never perfumed my bro, or my manssiere.
Bodychecking Moe Berg????
I have never stopped listening to their albums, especially Love Junk. Back in the days when I would have a cd changer I would stick Love Junk In The Trunk.
I really wanted to include the TPOH version of Edmonton Block Heater, but there are no links on Youtube. The only one is the soundtrack version, which is just as awesome, but did not suit the theme.

Haha the bra thing is just a lyric from the song. I did knock into Berg one time trying to get around a crowd in front of a bar in Toronto. I didn’t know it was him, and I was already apologizing profusely (I am a Canadian, after all) before I even knew who it was. He was cool about it.
Love Junk in the Trunk. Written like that, it’s a good thing I knew what you meant!

So if I break down my comment it refers to me wearing a bro and putting Love Junk in the Trunk. Hopefully WordPress allows me to continue after this.

How is that book? I like his writing, so I bet it was good.
I’ll have to look for that one.

One thing I found interesting was Moe Berg is also the name of a former Major League Baseball catcher that worked for the CIA.

I like these guys. And that Contract post was really good. Fine stuff all around!

I like them too. I like his writing. He seems very honest. I like how he looks back on his career and wishes he had done things differently. He seems very much like a normal person, and not a rock star.

Moe Berg has been writing some amazing rock songs for Helix. Full respect — the songs he has written with them have been excellent and not at all like TPOH.

I did know about his Helix stuff, and found out about others. It turns out I have a few in my collection. It sucks that TPOH haven’t done much new in a long time, but at least he is still sharing his talents.

Great pick! They seem to only be remembered for “I’m an adult now” but I remember them having plenty of other great tunes. I also remember seeing Moe Berg every where I went in Toronto for some reason in the late 90s

I could have added so many more Youtube clips, especially off the first 2 albums but wanted to give a broad prospective. That’s cool about Moe Berg. Such a distinctive look in a non-rock star kind of way. A few years ago I was flipping around the satellite tv and found a show where he was talking music production. It was really cool. I wish I had taped it, and can’t remember the show title.

They do have some compilations, but their first album Love Junk is an awesome spot to start. A really great debut album. Catchy tunes, great song writing and Todd Rundgren

I like that they’ve never officially broken up, keeps the door open.
I’m finding I’m relating to those ‘I’m an adult now’ lyrics more and more these days!

There is always hope. If I ever meet Moe Berg I will ask him “Hey Moe. Will TPOH ever be getting back together.” I bet he has never heard that before.
😉
I do too. I love the lyric’s about ‘I like to play it but I sure don’t like the racket.’ and ‘I’d sure look like a fool, dead in a ditch somewhere with a mind full of chemicals like some cheese eating high school boy.’
Absolutely brilliant.

I always loved the first 2 LPs – I can confidently say i was their biggest fan in South West Wales! The ladies left to form their own band, i seem to remember – laughter factory? or lightning factory? can’t quite remember …
I’ve got a couple of funny clippings in The Mighty Scrapbooks of Rock! Moe tried to piss on a postcard of Kylie Minogue on the stage at London Marquee Club … couldn’t quite bring the necessary fluid to the show though.
Wish I’d seen them.

I found the tv show I watched years ago with Moe in the studio. Attached are a few clips. The show was called Master Tracks and aired on AUX TV.

I’m a reporter at the St. Albert Gazette, and am about to write the thrilling conclusion to a three-part feature series on Moe and TPOH for this Saturday’s edition. Am wondering if I can use some of the comments about the band for a sidebar for the story. Email me at shayes@stalbert.greatwest.ca or I’m on Facebook (scotthayesreporter). Rock on!

Cool. No problem.
I would say try their first album called Love Junk. Produced by Todd Rundgren.
I like it from start to finish.

It’s funny. I just bought another copy of that album on vinyl last weekend.
I need to give it a spin.

Why have you got Van Halen background pics on a blog for TPOH? Many of us rockers recognize this lol .I think TPOH were great until they did stuff like ‘She’s So Young’ they totally sold out ,shame really.

Welcome. I do love TPOH, however, my blog is not about them. It’s about album reviews, concert reviews, stereo stuff, how to’s etc. I have the VH and Black Sabbath album covers in the background because those were the first 2 albums I bought with my own money when I was 12, so they have a special place in my heart. They are in the background of all of my posts.
As for TPOH, I don’t think they ever sold out. Moe Berg is still a music producer. He has stayed in Canada and neither him or the band got huge fame. More of a cult following. As for She’s so Young, that was the 4th song on their first album, so I don’t get the selling out part. I love that song, and love that whole album, so we will have to disagree. But that’s ok. I want to engage with people that have different opinions than mine. Maybe we can influence each other to come around and enjoy songs that we didn’t like at first.
That’s what reading these blogs is about.
Cheers and thanks for reading.
