Jersey Day Post # 1 – Helix – All I Want for Christmas… is the Leafs to Win the Cup b/w Jingle Bells (2012 – 7″ turquoise vinyl single)

Today is “Jersey Day” in Canada. Today we wear our jerseys to support the Humboldt Broncos hockey team and the community that suffered the loss of 16 lives when the team bus was hit by a transport truck last Friday. Fellow blogger Aaron gave a fitting tribute.

Today is also the start of the 2018 playoffs for my favourite team, Toronto Maple Leafs so I felt this single could multi-task.

All I want For Christmas is the Leafs to win the Cup – Brian Vollmer is the hardest working man in rock n roll and he, like me, is a long suffering Leaf fan. We suffered through the Harold Ballard years, Kerry Fraser’s famous non call, and the never ending signing of former great players that were too old and slow to regain their former glory. This song is a fitting tribute by a fellow Leaf fan. It has a fun beat, the chants are awesome and it mentions getting a Habs jersey would really suck.

Jingle Bells – The b side is a rocked up version of the Christmas song we have heard a million times. It originally appeared on the Helix album A Heavy Mental Christmas. It’s kind of refreshing, mainly because it’s not the Christmas season and I’m not bombarded by carols everywhere I go (Leafs go!!!).

  1. J. says:

So, are the Maple Leafs not very good, then? Or just unlucky?

I may not know an awfy lot about the Canadialand ice soccer, but I’ll throw my support at your team (cause maple syrup!).

  2. It’s a tough lot in life to be a Leafs fan, but I’ve been one sorta all along. My Dad is a Leaf fan from waaaay back and I got it from him. Of course, as a kid I guess I was an Edmonton fan too because Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Coffey, etc etc… who could blame, eh? Now though, I just want the best team that night to win, I don’t cheer for any one team anymore. Toronto has been exciting and it’s playoffs time so who knows? Go good hockey, go!

    • I can watch a game in which I don’t even cheer for either team and enjoy it if it is good hockey.
But if the Leafs are playing, they are my team.
Even back in the old days when they sucked.
At guys like Domi, Clark, Sittler, Gilmour, Tucker, etc. would be fun to watch.
As for where I got it from, believe or not, it was from my mom. My dad tolerates hockey, but my mom loves it.
I remember being so embarassed as a kid hearing her cheer for me from the stands, but looking back it was really great.

      • I get it though. I remember acidentally injuring another kid at a young age.
I think he broke his arm if I remember correctly.
His mom probably wanted him to quit.
My daughter played water polo and for those not in the know, it’s a really rough sport.
My daughter got hurt a few times, and all we can do is support her.
The sport mentality helps kids study better and at least we parents know where are kids are.

      • Yup, my boy plays soccer as his main gig and there are some kids who also play lacrosse who bring the rough of lacrosse into the soccer game and all it takes is one of those dumbasses to hurt a kid before the refs can catch them at their crap and it’s all over.

I remember one guy on our hockey team (as a kid) broke a kid’s collarbone with a hit from behind. He got benched a long time and we had a hard time talking to him aftewards. It was just dumb and sickening and stupid and pointless.

      • Not to worry – they say you’re only really in trouble when you lose at home, so by that logic, the Leafs are in better shape than the Pens!
But you’re right, that Bergeron line looks pretty strong

      • I was happy they played as well as they did but knew they would be in trouble with Bettman’s idiotic playoff pairing system.
I think they will win a game or 2, but they are a weaker team than Boston in every area. Plus Kadri is suspended, and Komorov is injured.
I knew the Leaf rebuild was a 5-6 year process.
They need some better D in the draft, and maybe a great free agent (Tavares?, Doughty?, Johnson?).
Then next season progress deeper in playoffs.
Then in 2-3 years play for Cup.

  3. First round is so overwhelming, the hockey gets real ( like the old days before they played 80 plus games). I have to pick my series or I’d be more of a basket case than I am already. Just watched Vegas/L.A. A Vegas sweep but it was 4 one goal games and entertaining as hell. Vegas is a good team. The whole package. Plus they have the # one ingredient you need to win the cup. A hot goalie. See if Fleury can maintain as they go deeper.

( Already said this over at Keeps Me Alive. Jersey day was acknowledged with my gal, my Ma and CB pulling on the Jerseys. It felt good. CB’s extended family had a member play for the Broncos when they were Canadian champs)

    • I love playoff hockey. The Leafs are finally playing the way I know they can.
If they keep this up, and we get Kadri back, the series may go 7 games.
I still think Boston is a bit better, but even if they lose, and play their best, I will be happy.
I will cheer for Vegas to win if Leafs out.
Always liked Fleury and I think he got the shaft in Pittsburgh. I felt bad he had to go to expansion team. But wow. Who knew?
I would love to see Vegas/Penguins cup final.
Fleury stones Crosby game 7 in OT and Vegas goes to other end and scores for the win.

Good job on the family jersey day.
Cool that you had relative former Bronco. Bet he had a heavy heart.

      • Playoff hockey is top notch sport. I don’t have any one team tattooed on my body. I just love to see great competition and the best team win.
Leafs are getting there. Management and coaching seems to be on the right track. I hear goaltending is solid. More additions with some game, and a good side of grit and battle mindset never hurts. Neal for Vegas is a good example. He was a force with Nashville last year,
I was thinking Vegas/Pens also. San Jose would be cool also. No matter how we slice it, it’s going to be good hockey if they have any juice left.
Yeah CB comes from a long line of Hockey players, hey I’m Canadian I got caught by the sport (and drinking beer). Spent a few years on the bus. My youngest guy spent half his life on the boneshaker across western Canada .
Yeah heavy heart like the rest of us. It all hits home but closer for some. Later fella.
